Facts or rumours - Apple VR headset

Apple has been rumoured to have been working on a pair of glasses capable of displaying virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for years. The device has been relatively quiet so far, but earlier this year it was rumoured to arrive around 2023.

However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the device could debut in mid-2022 and will be much cheaper than previously rumoured.

The current prototype weighs roughly 2-300 grams, but Apple wants to reduce that to 100-200 grams. Compared to the Oculus Quest 2 and Vive Cosmos Elit currently on the market, this would be a huge achievement.

The device will reportedly feature a micro-OLED display that would work in both transparent and non-transparent modes, depending on whether you want to display a virtual or augmented reality.

Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset will feature 15 optical camera modules in total. Eight of the 15 camera modules will be used for see-through augmented reality experiences, six modules will be used for "innovative biometrics," and one camera module will be used for environmental detection.

Design-wise, the headset has been described as having a "sleek, curved visor attached to the face by a mesh material and swappable headbands."

Apple plans to create an App Store for the headset, with a focus on gaming, streaming video content, and video conferencing.

The headset will be portable with independent power and storage, but it won't be "mobile" like an iPhone. It will provide an "immersive experience" that surpasses currently available VR products, and it could be integrated with Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.

Kuo says the device will be priced at around 00, a big change from the previously reported ,000.
